Chapter Fourteen

Wheeler glanced over the list of items found at the pond and its surrounding areas. Most of the things he knew had no connection to his case, but something did. He just didn’t know what that might be.

He looked up at the whiteboard where he had an enlarged map of the pond area drawn. A picture of Allison McTierney was taped to the spot where her body had been found. The track leading to the Lawler’s home was sketched in, as well as the more traveled easement leading to the Barclays’ home. Allison’s home was denoted with a square box, and the point where Adrienne had been found was marked with a small stick figure among the trees.

He stood and took a printout of the list to begin drawing in the items onto the map. Cigarette butts, plastic cup, plastic bags, muddy sock, takeout container, fishing lure…

He glanced over at the suspects he had so far. All three Barclays were there, as well as Gavin Butts. Allison’s nephew James Rawls was listed there, too. Below his name, several question marks made it clear that there could be someone as of yet unknown to them.

The ring of his phone broke into his thoughts, and he answered it. “Wheeler.”

Gabriel Garcia’s voice asked, “Did you get the list I sent you?”

“Yep. Just putting it onto the map now. Something up?”

“I wanted to go talk to Gavin Butts again, and maybe James Rawls. Did you want to go with me?”

“I would, but I’m tied here for a couple of days. If it can’t wait, go without me and just fill me in after.”

“I have a lot on my plate, it can wait a couple days. Email me when you are free, and I will try to set it up then.”

“Will do.”

Gabriel hung up then and Wheeler pocketed his phone. He was due in his office within half an hour and needed to go.

The dog rose from his bed in the corner of the den and padded after him, nails clicking on the wooden floor. He found the little cooler that held his lunch on the counter and a coffee mug next to it and sent a silent thanks to his wife. It was Thursday, which meant she was down at the school where she volunteered with the special needs children. He picked up his lunch and the coffee and headed out.

Jenna woke feeling thickheaded and lethargic. Officer Wilson had grilled her lengthily the evening before. He had made her go over her conversation with the Martins, making it clear he suspected some collusion in the plan to kill the coach. He had ended with a warning that they would be looking for any connection between Jenna and the shooting victim.

She curled into a ball on her side and tried to block the memories, but they kept coming.

“What was the demeanor of Mr. Martin when you arrived?” Officer Wilson asked.

“He was subdued, but I took him to be somewhat serious.”

“What did he do when you finished your ‘reading’?”

“He was somewhat agitated, but still composed.
